NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Matt Cardona Set To Undergo Surgery

After being released by WWE, Matt Cardona would work two matches with AEW without earning a full-time contract. At that point, it would have been easy to write him as yet another former WWE midcarder that failed to live up to their potential. Instead, however, he would go on to reinvent himself as a top-tier talent on the indies, even taking himself out of his comfort zone by getting involved in deathmatch wrestling. Sadly though, he has announced that following his match with Blake Christian at this past weekend’s GCW show, he has suffered a torn bicep and requires surgery.

Full recovery from this type of surgery can be anywhere from six months to a year, so with Cardona’s diary packed for the rest of 2022, there will undoubtedly be a lot of disappointed promoters right now. Yet, the most disappointed will likely be Billy Corgan, who put the NWA Worlds Championship on him back in February. The company is currently building towards their next event on Jun 12th, titled Alwayz Ready, based on Cardona’s motto, with him set to defend against Nick Aldis. Seemingly now, this match will be off, and Aldis will need an alternative opponent for the likely vacant championship.
