At one time, Kenny Omega was New Japan’s biggest star. However, he left the company shortly after Wrestle Kingdom 13 in January 2019 to sign with AEW as both a wrestler and EVP. Now though, it’s been revealed by New Japan that with Omega AEW suspension over, he is set to return. With the former IWGP Heavyweight Champion announced as Will Ospreay’s opponent for Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4th, 2023. The match will also be for Osperay’s IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship, a title which Omega was the inaugural champion for.
Omega and Ospreay have been feuding online for some time, and Ospreay would even use the One-Winged Angel as a finisher during a match, although his opponent would kick out. The pair have, though, already competed this year under the AEW brand when The Elite defeated United Empire in the semi-final of the World Trios Title Tournament. Dave Meltzer would rate this ****3/4, although many fans will be anticipating the rivals topping that rating.
