Following the release of their critically-acclaimed “Boombox” album, FOZZY shared the news that they would likely be following a new blueprint going forward for releasing new music.
In lieu of full albums, the band said they would focus on releasing singles periodically so that they would be able to cycle all of their new songs in and out of the set.
“We released ‘Boombox’ back, almost a year ago now,” singer Chris Jericho said previously.
“And it’s kind of a bad thing about a record, is you put all this time and all this heart and soul into 12 songs. Three of ’em are singles; all of ’em went Top 10. Three more of them we play live; they all go over great. And six of them just kind of disappear into the FOZZY song graveyard.”
“And that bothers me because there’s great songs there,” he continued. “So I think what we’re gonna do for a while is just release singles. I think that’s the business model we wanna do, ’cause I don’t want these great songs like ‘Omen’ or ‘The Worst Is Yet To Come’, ‘Army Of One’ — all of these great tunes that if you have ‘Boombox’, people go nuts for them, and they’ll never be played.”
On Thursday, the band revealed that the first of those singles, “Spotlight,” will be available on all streaming providers on Thursday, Oct. 19, and the video for the song will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 26.
“You’ve been asking for new music, and you’ve got it coming!” the band said via social media. “We are thrilled to share a teaser of our upcoming new single, “Spotlight”, which will be available on all streaming providers next Thursday, October 19th!”
The band also wrote: “Start using the #FOZZYSPOTLIGHT NOW, and we will be sharing our favorite videos/photos to our stories when the official sound drops on TikTok/IG + throughout the release!! And don’t forget that if you join us on our upcoming ‘Spotlight on North America’ Tour, you WILL be the first fans EVER to hear ‘Spotlight’ LIVE!”
Guitarist Rich Ward told 93.3 Planet Rocks in Greenville, South Carolina of “Spotlight”: “Anyone who’s known me for any length of time always knows I’m a fan of dance riffs. I mean, Stuck Mojo was just a dance band dressed up in evil, heavy metal riffs. I’ve always been a fan of both. And partially because I grew up in the late ’70s, early ’80s in the disco era. That was what music was popular; that was the most popular soundtrack, the most popular album when I was a kid. And I Is loved dance music — Donna Summer and KOOL & THE GANG. These are people that put out albums that I was always in love with. And I loved Dick Clark, I loved America’s Top 40, but I also loved ‘Soul Train’. This is part of my DNA.”
He continued: “So, this new song is a heavy metal dance song. It’s just perfect. It’s so suited for who I am as a guy and as a musician, as a songwriter. Jericho loves it. It’s (producer) Johnny’s (Andrews) kind of brainchild. So we’re all dunking basketballs; we’re so excited about it. ‘Cause any time you have a new that everybody’s on board… Everyone loves the new song. It’s a super-rad song.”
