Chris Jericho Shares Who He Thinks Killed WCW

The new Vice documentary series “Who Killed WCW?” is a current hot topic among wrestling fans, and “Dark Side Of The Ring” creators Evan Husney and Jason Eisener are producers on the project. The pair talked all about the show on the latest episode of “Talk Is Jericho.”

While most wrestling fans agree that there was a combination of many events and factors that led to the ultimate demise of WCW, Chris Jericho offered up his thoughts on what killed the promotion during the interview. He also echoed the sentiment that it was a number of things, but pointed to the promotion’s younger talent being unable to garner any real opportunities given the massive popularity of the NWO.

“The NWO were so cool, there’s nothing that we as babyfaces could do,” Jericho said. “NWO got so cool, but they were still portrayed as the heels. So there was nothing anybody could do except Sting, Luger, Savage. Maybe Roddy Piper? Then there’s 20 or 30 of us that don’t have a chance.”

Jericho went on to say later in the podcast: “What started kind of the cracks (in WCW) was not pushing some of the guys of our generation up against some of (the bigger talent). Contrary to popular belief of people thinking I only care about myself, in AEW I always make sure to work with younger guys. You know what I mean? Because we never got to do that. I never had a match with Randy Savage. What a travesty. And I saw Randy after I left. And he said, ‘You know what? I always wish you and I would’ve had a match.’ I was like, ‘Dude I’m sure you could’ve requested one.’ (I) never got to work with Bret. Never got to really work with any of those guys.”

Jericho also shared his thoughts on one of WCW’s most infamous moments: The finger poke of doom. “(In the show) Nash goes, ‘But you’re still talking about it,’” Jericho said. “Just admit, it was not a good idea.”

Husney then chimed in: “(Nash) says, ‘You know why people hate that? Because it got ‘em.’ Got ‘em to change the channel.” Jericho concluded: “Your stomach gets you when you poop your pants after eating a burrito, too, but that’s no fun either.”
