On Friday, Bodyslam.net reported that Mustafa Ali had been omitted from New Japan’s prestigious Best of the Super Juniors tournament because he wasn’t prepared to lose any matches. Obviously, this saw the current TNA X Division Champion heavily criticized online, and some fans would go as far as to compare him to Hulk Hogan in response to this. However, Rocky Romero, Vice President for both AEW and New Japan, has subsequently taken to X to deny this, simply saying, “This isn’t true“ in a tweet that linked to the original article.
Since being released by WWE last year, 38-year-old Ali has been undefeated despite wrestling at least 30 matches for multiple promotions. Yet, if Romero is to be believed, Ali’s win streak has nothing to do with refusing to put anyone over and is simply because bookers see him as someone worth protecting. Therefore, it will be interesting to see Ali’s win/loss record going forward, as he could easily silence his detractors by losing a match on the indies.
