Big Show’s WrestleMania 21 Opponent Akebono Has Passed Away

In sad news, it has been reported that Akebono Taro, real name Chadwick Rowan, has passed away aged 54 following heart failure. The former sumo wrestler had been unwell for several years and, at one point, had even been in a coma and lost the use of his legs. He is survived by his wife, Christine, and sons, Cody and Conner.

While best known to North American fans for his WrestleMania 21 match against Big Show, he had a long career in Japanese wrestling following his Sumo retirement. During this time, he worked for several promotions, winning many titles, with the All Japan Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship being the most prestigious. Additionally, he founded his own company called Odo with the backing of Giant Baba’s widow, where he served as president until his health declined.
