AEW Talent Announces Long-Awaited Surgery After “12 Years Of Suffering”

Injuries have unfortunately always been a big part of pro wrestling, with most performers who work regularly constantly banged up to some degree. Still, it is rare for someone to be dealing with the same injury for 12 years, although that is precisely what Matt Sydal has revealed has been the case with him, having announced on X that he is finally getting surgery to repair his right foot. While not confirmed, it appears this is related to the motorcycle accident he was involved in back in 2012 while working for WWE, which saw him suffer multiple breaks and dislocations.

“After 12 years of suffering, I’m getting my right foot fixed today. The surgeon has to break and re-fuse three bones, and use hardware to set my toes into the joints. Thank you to @AEW and our Medical Staff for the care. Thanks to the fans who’ve stuck with me the whole time. Love you all! The best is yet to come…”

41-year-old Sydal began wrestling in 2000, and after working for TNA, ROH, Wrestling Society X, and Dragon Gate he had firmly established himself as one of the top high flyers in the world. Subsequently, he signed with WWE in 2007 and was renamed Evan Bourne, and while he had a memorable run with the company, he ended up being released following two wellness test violations and the aforementioned foot injury.  Therefore, it initially appeared his career in mainstream American wrestling was over, although once AEW launched, that opened the door to him making a big league comeback.
